Children’s Education Department

Neighborhood Legal Services Michigan (NLSM) has been addressing critical community needs for nearly 50 years. With a strong reputation for effective legal advocacy and educational services, NLSM serves a diverse population that includes youth, seniors, crime victims, survivors of human trafficking, individuals with disabilities, and other underserved adults and children.

NLSM is known for pioneering innovative justice initiatives, educational programs, and support services. Our team brings extensive experience working with juveniles and has cultivated strong partnerships with numerous schools across Metropolitan Detroit. Our longstanding history of professional service, successful community collaborations, and deep understanding of our target population underscore our effectiveness in delivering impactful programs.

In 1982, NLSM launched the Children’s Education Division (CED) to offer age-appropriate college and career readiness programs for students from elementary through high school. Over the decades, CED has developed a deep understanding of the challenges facing youth today and has built a strong foundation through educational and interactive programming. Centered on career pathways, the program follows a holistic social model that integrates life skills, experiential learning, and guided discussions to reduce risky behaviors and foster a strong sense of purpose among participants.

During 2023, the Children’s Education Division provided programming in the Detroit Public Schools Community District and the River Rouge School District.
